Access assistive technology and items to help with performing daily tasks via the Goods, Equipment and Assistive Technology Service (GEAT).
What is GEAT?
As of July 1 2018, the Independent Living Centre WA has been providing a GEAT service as part of the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP). With a focus on maintaining an individual’s safety and independence, this service enables people who are eligible for the CHSP to access certain items to assist them in performing daily tasks such as personal care, communication, reading and mobility.
It is designed to provide low level assistance to older people aged 65 years and over (50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) to enable them to cope with a functional limitation while maintaining their independence.
GEAT provides a capped annual subsidy of $500 per eligible individual to obtain equipment item/s. This can include:
- The purchase of assistance item/s
- Consultation to provide information about aids and equipment; and/or
- Hire for short term needs.
In line with the CHSP Client Contribution Framework, if their financial circumstances allow, clients are requested to pay a contribution of 25% towards the cost of an item. Individuals will not be refused service based on their ability to pay.
How Do I Access GEAT Services?
Register for an assessment through My Aged Care. A Regional Assessment Service (RAS) or Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) will determine when assistive equipment is required and provide a referral to the GEAT service.
What is Covered by the GEAT Service?
Basic and essential equipment items, which pose a low risk to the individual and others including:
- Dressing aids
- Shower chairs
- Sensor mats
- Over-toilet frames
- Walking frames
- Adapted utensils
- Low vision aids
- Personal alarms
A specialised assessment and recommendation may be required to be completed by an appropriate health professional to support referrals for some items.
