  ILC TECH   ISSUE 01 Term 2, 2013  

The Independent Living Centre of Western Australia (ILC) provides information and advice, assessment, funding and hire services that enable Western Australians of all ages and abilities to live more comfortable, independent and fulfilling lives.

Service areas include respite and carelink, multicultural aged care, assistive technology and equipment, occupational therapy driver assessment, Home and Community Care regional assessment, and grants and equipment funding.


ILC Tech provides information, advice and training on specialised computer access; technologies to support education; and augmentative and alternative communication equipment for people of all ages.


ILC Australia National Database

Did you know ILC Australia have a new national website and equipment database? You can search over 10,000 assistive technology and equipment products to help people remain independent and improve their quality of life.

ILC WA has joined with Independent Living Centres throughout Australia to develop a new national equipment database. Search by key word, advanced search or by browsing through the products by topics. You will find information about the product including a description, specifications and suppliers Australia wide.

Using Ipads in Speech Pathology

ILC Tech has recently completed a research project which involved collating information about iPad apps found to be most beneficial for assessment and intervention with both paediatric and adult clients. Speech Pathology students from Curtin University have created a comprehensive resource that contains guidelines for how to set up and use an iPad, a list of apps that have been recommended from different speech pathology clinics across Western Australia and a compiled list of apps for different areas of speech and language.

2013 ILC Tech Country Visits

ILC Tech has had two packed visits in Albany and Kalgoorlie to finish off an eventful 2012/13 financial year! Over the past 12 months we have met some amazing people across the state as we visited Kununurra, Northam, Merredin, Narrogin, Geraldton and Albany.

ILC Tech is now taking expressions of interest for country visits from July 2013 onwards. We are funded to provide a limited number of appointments in country areas each year. Appointments will be held with a Speech Pathologist or Occupational Therapist from the Technology Service.

Technology workshops may also be available on request. Recent workshops include iPads in Special Education, Boardmaker and Proloquo2Go training. ILC Workshops do incur a fee. Contact Jessica on 9381 0600 or for the full list of workshops.

ILC Tech is planning a visit to Busselton and surrounding towns from the 22 - 24 July 2013.

PODD Workshop Review

The PODD 2-day introductory workshop was presented by Gayle Porter. It was hosted at the ILC on the 8th and 9th of April and attended by a range of speech pathologists, educators and parents. Gayle Porter is a Senior Clinician of Speech Pathology at the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre (CPEC) in Melbourne. She has worked for more than 29 years with children with a disability and is the creator of PODD. Gayle’s workshop was inspiring and she spoke passionately about providing strong language learning environments for AAC users.

Pinterest is an online tool that allows you to save and share websites, images or videos that you find on the internet. It works like a virtual pin up board.

The TAP-it is now on display at ILC Tech from The Brainary.

The TAP-it is a Touch Accessible Platform for Interactive Technology. It works with any software you have on your computer. The touch screen only reads ’intended touch’ allowing one hand to rest on the screen for stability. It is portable, height and tilt adjustable.
