Developing eye gaze skills for learning, communication and recreation
Eye gaze technology is an emerging technology that allows students to use the movements of their eyes to control a computer or communication device. This can break down the barriers to accessing communication and learning materials for some students with complex physical needs who find it difficult to point or manipulate learning materials.
The ‘Engaging in Eye Gaze : Collaborating and Consulting with Schools’ Project was funded by the Non Government Centre Support for Non-School Organisations of Western Australia (NGCS). This project built on the previous work and resources from the NGCS funded Unlocking Abilities project. A video series and additional information sheets have been produced to support successful use of eye gaze technology and use in the classroom.
A range of eye gaze technology options are available for short term hire through ILC Hire. If you would like further information on any of the equipment available or the support ILC can provide for individuals or schools, please contact one of our Occupational Therapists or Speech Pathologists on (08) 9381 0600 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Introduction to Eye Gaze Technology
Eye gaze technology is one option that students with complex physical needs might use to access a computer or communication device. This emerging technology can break down barriers to accessing communication and learning for some students who find it difficult to point or manipulate learning materials.
Considerations for Choosing an Eye Gaze System
With a range of different eye gaze technology options on the market it can be difficult to know which options to choose. Each system contains its own features and benefits which means no one system will be the best choice for everyone. When selecting an eye gaze system for an individual, or for a number of students to use in a school, it’s important to consider the features that are needed and then compare systems based on these needs.
Set up and Positioning for use of an Eye Gaze System
Getting the right setup and positioning for eye gaze is extremely important for it to work effectively. The goal when positioning for eye gaze use is to achieve a stable eye image for the eye gaze system to track.
Keys to developing Eye Gaze Skills
There are a range of cognitive and motor skills involved for different activities. As with any new tool, students need opportunities and support to learn how to operate an eye gaze system.
Additional resources for different access methods (switch and touchscreen) are available on the Unlocking Abilities page.
