ILC launches new training services

Teresa-Santoro-ACSWA-Rod-Mackintosh-Malibu-School-Gerri-Clay-and-Jim-EllisOn 30 April 2014, the Independent Living Centre WA (ILC) launched its new training services at an event attended by a range of health professionals, educators, and service providers, all of whom were interested to find out how the ILC can meet their training needs.

With over 35 years experience and staffed by expert health professionals, the ILC is well positioned to deliver professional training and community information sessions covering topics relevant to people working in the aged care, disability, community, health, education and early childhood sectors.

The launch was an opportunity to showcase exactly what training the ILC has on offer with information booths displayed, a range of training resources and equipment available and ILC trainers on hand to discuss people’s training needs.

Kelly Moore, the ILC’s Training Coordinator, emphasized the point that the ILC can tailor training programs to suit the needs of an organisation, and spoke about the range of training topics the ILC has on offer, including:

  • Assistive technology and equipment: its prescription and use;
  • Assistive learning technologies in education;
  • Home, community and aged care services, pathways and funding;
  • Multicultural aged care services; and
  • Learning and development through play.

“The sheer scale of this growth will test our ability to provide the care our ageing population requires and deserves. With growth in numbers of older people will also come greater diversity in their needs, preferences and aspirations,” she said.

Teresa also spoke about importance of cultural diversity awareness and training. “WA is home to the highest proportion of overseas born residents in Australia. Cultural diversity characterises the aged care industry in Australia from both a client and workforce perspective. ”

ILC’s Multicultural Aged Care Services (ILC MACS) offers information and training to support aged care providers to plan and establish best practice for older people from diverse backgrounds.

ACSWA have worked alongside ILC MACS previously, and in May they are hosting a joint event titled “Courageous Conversations about Race”.

The ILC was also fortunate to have Rod Mackintosh, a teacher from Malibu School speak at the launch. Malibu School offers educational and other programs to students with a range of intellectual and physical disabilities. Rod spoke about his experience with the training he has received by ILC Tech.

“I strongly encourage all educators to check out the ILC Tech Service. It has been more than ten years since I first established contact with the team and over that time they have provided the most professional and invaluable service to the teachers at our school and opened many doors and opportunities for the students with a disability.”
